August 16. “Educating White Kids: A Race-Conscious Conversation for Everyone” Dr. Todd Mealy

August 16, 2020 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Public schools in the twenty-first century are a center in the struggle for social justice. Many Americans don’t think of schools this way: in 1954 the Surpreme Court decision Brown v. Education desegrated schools, which we think of as apolitical centers of instruction. And yet, the framework of colorblindness has long existed as the default in American schools. At majority-white schools institutional structures make learning for students of color challenging while emboldening dominant culture notions of meritocracy and color-silence. Todd Mealy will explore racial histories and a race-blind approach to teaching and learning by challenging educators (and parents) to become advocates of race-conscious instruction.

The holder of a Ph.D. in American Studies from Pennsylvania State University, Todd Mealy has authored seven books and is a regular contributor for the Pennsylvania Heritage. His publications focus on 19th and 20th-century civil rights history, the intersection of sports and race, and critical race studies. His twenty-year career as an educator includes tenures at J.P. McCaskey and Penn Manor High Schools, and as adjunct professor in History at Dickinson College. He is the founder of the Equity Institute for Race-Conscious Pedagogy, a research institute that gives educators tools to center race in cross-disciplinary curricula.

Worship Associate Bradden Weaver is a Community Education instructor for IU13 and a high school Social Studies teacher. A Unitarian Universalist for over 30 years, Brad serves on UUCL’s Board of Trustees and Racial Justice and Healing team.
