August 30: “The Openhearted Church: The Small Things of Welcome on a Sunday Morning Aren’t Small.” Sindy Pollard, Bradden Weaver

We celebrate that for decades UU churches have made incredible strides in becoming “Welcoming Congregations,” affirming all sexual orientations and identities. Still much work remains to do to welcome all previously marginalized groups. Indeed, just as America has been forced to confront structural racism, UU congregations must now face hard, soul-searching questions about changing culture if professed principals of racial, ethnic and socio-economic diversity are to become reality in the pews and in congregational leadership. Sindy and Brad will raise the tough question: “What must happen on a Sunday morning for people to experience a sincere, genuine welcome, in the building, in Zoom space?” How do seemlgy inconsequential details create a feeling of belonging? What does it take to move beyond comfort zones and widen the circle of welcome?
