Sunday Service: “Grief as an Experience, Not an Event” with Karen Carnabucci
Join us July 24th in Founders Hall for a Sunday Service led by Karen Carnabucci. Registration is not required. This is a summer service so will not be live-streamed. Founders Hall is on UUCL’s basement level, which is accessible by stairs and elevator.
Weather permitting, we may invite you to go outdoors to make ritual art during worship. The main-floor nursery will be open for supervised play for children of all ages, hosted by Amanda Maher, faith development assistant, and UUCL members. Everyone over 2 years old needs to wear a mask.
Grief as an Experience Not an Event
Change is inevitable, and change is accompanied by loss. Often when
talking about loss, we turn to the language of current popular
psychology and speak of “letting go” or “finding closure,” vague
phrases that suggest that the task is to find the moment that
concludes the event of loss.
In this interactive worship experience, conducted by Karen Carnabucci,
LCSW, TEP, we will look at loss and grief not as an event, but rather
as an experience to contemplate and look to how we can support the
natural process of emotional restoration and transformation.
We will use gentle community, mindfulness, art making and simple
ritual to create a greater sense of awareness and understanding within
ourselves about the losses that we experience every day, often without
taking time to reflect or acknowledge.
Those attending will have the opportunity to participate at the level
at which they feel comfortable, whether that means listening, sitting
mindfully, sharing with others in small groups or making ritual art.
