Sing a Song Into My Heart: Using Music to Connect with Self, Others, and the Divine
Sunday Service August 8th
Come on a musical journey with our own talented UU member Diane Toigo, and music therapist/interfaith leader Molly Grace Hicks, a member of Old Haverford Friends meeting who works as a bereavement counselor for Penn Medicine Hospice. Molly is also familiar as a point of connection between UUCL and the recent Interfaith Racial Justice Vigils in the Philadelphia suburbs.
Hear stories of the healing power of music therapy from Diane and its evolution during her 40 years in the field. From Molly, learn how music can enrich our individual lives, connect us to our potential, our community and the larger world, and promote the cause of justice.
We have special permission to use a recording of the Music for Everyone Community Chorus singing Ukuthula, an African piece with repetitive lyrics and hand movements that everyone can move along with at home (and our beloved Larry Carroll is one of the chorus members). Each verse targets a specific quality (peace, strength, etc.), and the soloist, Tiffany Brown, is magnificent. Enjoy an interactive songwriting experience with Molly as she creates lyrics from ideas we type into the CHAT.
Come join us Sunday August 8 at 10 AM on Zoom!
Molly Hicks is a member of Old Haverford Friends Meeting, located in the suburbs of Philadelphia, where she is Co-Clerk of the Peace Committee and also sits on the Worship & Ministry and Outreach Committees. In her professional life, Molly is a music therapist and bereavement coordinator with Penn Medicine Hospice, serving grieving adults through individual counseling and support groups. Molly has always felt drawn toward interfaith work, and is especially grateful for the partnerships she has formed with local clergy and lay leaders over the last 5 years. With this group, Molly has helped to plan and host both virtual and in person racial justice vigils as well as other community programming focusing on equity. She is a vocalist with the Interfaith Music Project of Philadelphia and enjoys performing with bandmates from diverse faith backgrounds. Molly also co-hosts a monthly Interfaith Meeting for Song, where she and others share music with deep personal and spiritual connections. In much of what she does, Molly uses music and other forms of creativity to connect with other people, with herself, and with God, and is pleased to share this part of her life with you today. Being a Quaker, she also believes in the value of the silence between the sound, as a space for us to reflect on our thoughts and feelings and any messages we might be receiving.
