Dawnland was featured on PBS and tells the story of Indigenous child removal in the US and the devastating impact on the Wabanaki “people of the dawn” people of the upper Northeast. For decades, Maine’s child welfare system placed Wabanaki children in foster or adoptive homes under the presumption that assimilating into white society would improve their quality of life and give them a better future. Many children in the system suffered untold physical and psychological abuse.
Dear Georgina follows the late Georgina Sappier-Richardson (who was a Lancaster County resident), as she tries to fill in the blurry lines of her identity. At age two, she was removed from her home and Passamaquoddy community in Downeast Maine by child protection services. She would never see her parents again. Terror and abuse followed over 16 years in four different foster homes. We are so fortunate that Georgina’s daughter, Janeen, will be present this Sunday to share more about her remarkable mother and the impacts of the U.S.’s indigenous child removal policy.
