August 16, 2020 SUNDAY SERVICESWORSHIP 10:00 AMRED ROSE SANGHA 6:00 PMSUNDAY MORNING SERVICE:Educating White Kids: A Race-Conscious Conversation for Everyone with Dr. Todd Mealy 10:00 am – 11:00 am The framework of colorblindness has long existed as the default in American schools. At majority-white schools institutional structures make learning for students of color challenging while emboldening dominant culture notions of meritocracy and color-silence. Todd Mealy will explore racial histories and a race-blind approach to teaching and learning by challenging educators (and parents) to become advocates of race-conscious instruction. The holder of a Ph.D. in American Studies from Pennsylvania State University, Todd Mealy has authored seven books and is a regular contributor for the Pennsylvania Heritage. His publications focus on 19th and 20th-century civil rights history, the intersection of sports and race, and critical race studies. His twenty-year career as an educator includes tenures at J.P. McCaskey and Penn Manor High Schools, and as adjunct professor in History at Dickinson College. He is the founder of the Equity Institute for Race-Conscious Pedagogy, a research institute that gives educators tools to center race in cross-disciplinary curricula. Worship Associate Bradden Weaver is a Community Education instructor for IU13 and a high school Social Studies teacher. A Unitarian Universalist for over 30 years, Brad serves on UUCL’s Board of Trustees and Racial Justice and Healing team.Link to join: https://zoom.us/j/96623739683?pwd=UWFMQzF5OFR2V05idUJVSVNwYzBVdz09 Or join by phone: 301-715-8592Meeting ID:966 2373 9683Password: 71717 There is no Children’s Service this week but check back soon! From Your Board of Trustees The Board would like to thank Rev Barbara for all of the years of service, wisdom, mentoring, and just plain hard work that she has done to bring our church to the place where we are now. It’s hard to remember where we were when she arrived, but we are certainly so much better for her having been here. Many thanks to Rev Barbara and good wishes to her in her next challenge. Muncie is lucky. |

Sunshine Wolfe and the Rev. Renee Ruchotzke on a topic that is pertinent for these times of pandemics and racial strife. This is a free webinar for which you can sign up online at the CER website. Stay Connected with Realm! Most of the congregation has been contacted regarding this church online community. This is a great way to stay connected to members of UUCL, especially those with whom you serve on committees or in small groups. While most gave permission to be listed in the online directory, only 116 people created log-ins to access the directory and edit their own information. All members of UUCL who have a valid email address received an invitation to create a log-in. Please let Bev Geib know if you need a new email invitation to create yours! She can be reached at financialmanager@uuclonline.org . Hope to connect with you in Realm! |
