Sunday Worship Service: Spring Equinox/Ostara Outdoors

March 20, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

This Sunday we will hold our Sunday Service in Lancaster County Park, Pavilion 1. We will be celebrating the Spring Equinox, known by many as Ostara. If you are not comfortable on picnic benches please bring folding chairs. We will be outside so dress warmly. This outdoor venue has irregular sidewalks and uneven ground surrounding. The pavilion is level.

Since we’ll be outside, masks are optional for most of the gathering, but we do request you bring one to wear while singing.
If you have any mature compost, please bring a small bag of it for our earth mingling ritual.

We look forward to seeing you!

Many people at UUCL find meaning in nature-centered spirituality, one of the six sources of Unitarian Universalism. This year, we have been honoring pagan holidays during outdoor Sunday morning worship services, in collaboration with Web & Wheel.

Ostara marks the moment in the wheel of the year where the light that was rekindled at Yule balances the darkness… and then overtakes it. Ostara takes place on the Spring Equinox. In 2022, that’s March 20th in the Northern hemisphere.

Ostara is one of the eight pagan Sabbats. Ostara celebrates the spring equinox. The word Ostara comes from the Anglo-Saxon goddess name, Eostre. Eostre represented spring and new beginnings. The celebration of spring is present in many ancient customs, across all cultures, and some contemporary pagan traditions have drawn from many of them for Ostara. Like many other spring celebrations in other cultures, Ostara symbolizes fertility, rebirth, and renewal. This time of year in this part of the world marks the beginning of the agricultural cycle, when farmers start planting seeds.
