A note on the Sunday Service from Rev. Israel

I have been inviting us to connect to the themes from our services by engaging in ritual using commonly found household objects. My intention is for this to provide physical touchstones to help you to connect with and embody the concepts we are exploring.

In order to streamline this process, I would like to take up the practice of giving you all advanced notice in this newsletter, to let you know what kind of objects I might be inviting you to use.

This week, we will be continuing to explore the promises and commitments we make to one another. We will also reflect on the ways we have broken our vows, and we will engage in a collective ritual of atonement.

I’m giving you a few options to participate in this ritual. Here are some materials that you can use, so choose either of the following:

  1. A bowl of water and some crumbs
  2. A baking sheet/large plate/platter and either flour, coffee grinds, sand, or dirt
  3. A piece of paper and a pencil/eraser
  4. Chalkboard and chalk
Children’s Worship
11:15AM-12PM: Children and their families are invited to share familiar rituals of chalice lighting and stones of joys and sorrows. Bring a comfy blanket, a candle or cup, and stones.

Public Witness Action for Racial Justice and Healing
Today 4:30-6:30PM

A public witness action for racial justice and healing will take place in front of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Lancaster (538 W. Chestnut Street) on Friday, Sept 25 from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

These actions serve as a silent moral witness (holding signs) to support equal justice for all. The public is cordially invited to join in and stand with members from UUCL and other Lancaster faith communities. Social distancing will be maintained and mask wearing is required. Participants are encouraged to bring a sign expressing a call for racial justice, anti-racism, and progressive socialchange.

Adult Faith Development
Conversation on Alternatives to Policing
Hosted by All Souls Unitarian, DC
Tuesday, October 6, 2020, 7-9PM

In June, the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) voted to adopt a call to action “to engage in the larger movement to end anti-Blackness and defund the police.” (see the text of the AIW.) What does this mean for our congregations? On Tuesday, October 6th, the Central East UUA Region invites us to join India Harris and Rev. Jason Lydon to discuss alternatives to calling the police and over-policing communities.

See the description for more details and pre-webinar reading materials, then click “Register” to secure a spot. When you register, please email Lenore at Lenore@uuclonline.org: she will be in touch about UUCL-specific ways to process the webinar.

Soul Matters groups are forming for the fall!

Register now to participate in a Soul Matters group! (link:

In our church community, physical distancing does not have to mean social distancing. Small groups of people committed to exploring spirituality together are forming right now to meet online for this church year! Learn more on our website, or sign up today.
In joining a Soul Matters group, you can expect to gather online each month with 8-10 fellow Unitarian Universalists to explore your spiritual life in a deeper way. Soul Matters groups meet online once a month to explore our church’s monthly theme through an at-home packet of spiritual readings, videos, music, and soul-searching questions. Existing groups will continue or resume in September; new groups will begin meeting as they form, in late September or early October.

VOTE FORWARD ACTION!

Our volunteers have completed just over 820 letters and 200 postcards. Let’s send more! Are you IN?

The Racial Justice and Healing Committee at UUCL has teamed up with Vote Forward to increase civic participation by writing non-partisan letters to voters! Sending a Vote Forward letter is one of the easiest things you can do to increase turnout. It takes two minutes and one stamp, and meaningfully increases the odds that the recipient will vote. It’s a concrete action you can take to get unlikely-to-vote fellow citizens to the polls.

UUtheVote’s goal is to engage 1,000 UUs in PA to take part in moving our values more fully into our political system – that’s 20% of PA UUs & 20% of UUCL.

Please take our 3 question survey and aid us in our goal! https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HVSFKK9

We need you! NOW IS THE TIME!

Contact Michele or Susan for more information and to get set up with instructions and supplies! We will have a table at the Public Witness event on Friday, Sept 25, 4:30 PM.
