NAACP of Lancaster has been serving our county for 97 years with a mission to secure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights in order to eliminate race-based discrimination and ensure the health and well-being of all person. | | Your Assignment Before the Service Our theme for the month of October is deep listening, so we will be taking a look at ways to remind ourselves to pause and listen deeply to the presence of the sacred in our midst. In order to begin that process this week, we will be using some physical reminders during worship. So, I am inviting you to bring some items to the service to serve as your touchstones. You are invited to bring a piece of string, yarn, or twine. You’re also invited to bring the thing you use as an alarm clock and/or the thing you use to remind yourself of your appointments. This could be your smartphone, or a physical calendar/planner. And one last thing! I also invite you if you wish to bring an object that feels sacred or special to you. I’ll leave it to you to interpret what that means. It’s also ok if nothing comes to mind! Ultimately, themes important thing I want you to bring yourself. -Rev. Israel | | Come one, come all for Sacred Space-Making / Wonder Box kits! For use during worship, faith development, and your everyday life, during the month of October. Sunday, October 4, 11:30AM-1PM and/or Wednesday, October 7, 5-6:30PM Sidewalk outside UUCL, 538 W Chestnut St. | | While we are away from the church building, making space for the sacred in our own lives takes on new importance. This Sunday, we are kicking off a new monthly practice for all ages: offering ‘kits’ for setting up sacred spaces in your home, to use during online worship and for caring for your (and your family’s) spiritual life. This month’s will help you set up your space, connect with UUCL, and explore October’s theme of “Deep Listening.” Following Sunday’s worship service for all ages on finding the sacred in our lives, you are invited to come by the church sidewalk on Sunday or Wednesday (wearing a mask and observing physical distancing, please). Rev. Israel, Lenore, and Heather will help you choose materials for your sacred space-making—including water from this year’s Water Ceremony and special Wonder Box activities for kids! Please bring (if you can): a cloth or other re-usable bag. We will help you “upcycle” it as your worship kit bag. Bring an extra for someone else! If you cannot come in person but would like a kit, or if you know someone at UUCL who would, please email Lenore the name(s) of all household members and address (Lenore@uuclonline.org). We will gladly make and bring you a kit. We are so excited to share this new practice with you. – Rev. Israel Buffardi, Minister, and Lenore Bajare-Dukes, Director of Lifespan Faith Development | | Children’s Worship The first Sunday of every month (including this Sunday) will be a multigenerational service. Children and youth are warmly invited to every worship service at UUCL, but are especially encouraged to attend multigenerational services. These are typically very interactive, dynamic, and crafted to engage people of all ages. After the service, plan to stick around to say hello and share what you did during worship! There will be no separate children’s worship this Sunday. | | Conversation on Alternatives to Policing Hosted by All Souls Unitarian, DC Tuesday, October 6, 2020, 7-9PM In June, the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) voted to adopt a call to action “to engage in the larger movement to end anti-Blackness and defund the police.” (see the text of the AIW.) What does this mean for our congregations? On Tuesday, October 6th, the Central East UUA Region invites us to join India Harris and Rev. Jason Lydon to discuss alternatives to calling the police and over-policing communities. See the description for more details and pre-webinar reading materials, then click “Register” to secure a spot. When you register, please email Lenore at Lenore@uuclonline.org: she will be in touch about UUCL-specific ways to process the webinar. | | The Soul Matters theme for October, which our whole church is exploring in many ways, is “Deep Listening.” How are you listening: to your loved ones, to yourself, to your life, to the environment around you? It is not too late to sign up for a Soul Matters group for the year! Small groups of 8-10 people meet online each month, guided by a facilitator, to deeply listen to one another and to share from the heart. Learn more about Soul Matters and sign up on our website. | | Church Life & Announcements | | Doing Theology in the Age of Trump Walters/Garvin Lecture Wednesday, October 14, 2020 7 PM by zoom The Walters/Garvin Committee will present a lecture via Zoom entitled: “What the Split in White Evangelicalism Tells Us About the State of Christianity in America Today” by Dr. Jeffrey Robbins, Professor of Religion and Philosophy at Lebanon Valley College, Wednesday, October 14, at 7 p.m. To register for this event, go to: www.uuclonline.org/robbins/ | | UUCL Expressions Our variety show via Zoom Saturday Night, 6:30 pm October 17, 2020 Event details: Pre-recorded works viewed together in Zoom Submit Acts through google form by October 11th 3-5 mins per Act Zoom link available closer to event date!
